Is the course for me?

The Level 2 Diploma NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in Shopfitting Bench Work is a measure of competence of an individual’s capability to carry out a range of work to the performance criteria which have been agreed by the shopfitting industry. Each Diploma NVQ is made up of a number of individual ‘units of competence’.

This is a ‘work based’ qualification and is only accessible to those employed in the bench joinery industry.

The Diploma NVQ comprises:

Mandatory Units

Occupation-specific Units (additional and mandatory)

Assessment of work carried out in the work place

A portfolio of work carried out in the work place

Written underpinning knowledge questions

What does the course involve?

You need to gather evidence of:

Mandatory Units(all of the following):

Conforming to General safety in the workplace

Conforming to Efficient working practices in the workplace

Moving and handling resources in the workplace

Additional Units(one from the following):

Setting up and using Circular saws in the workplace

Producing setting out details for routine Shopfitting products in the workplace

Marking out from setting out details for routine Shopfitting products in the workplace

Manufacture routine Shopfitting products in the workplace

How will I learn?

You will learn in a variety of ways:

On the job training by employer

Group and individual study at college

Work based assessment

Practical assessments

Written Assignments

Written Question Papers

Oral questioning at the end of each practical assessment

The use of on-line facilities

Considerable home study is required along with completely a portfolio of evidence showing the relevant skills gathered in the work place.

The course consists of a series of College set practical assessments and written assignments; together they consolidate the theory knowledge gained during group and individual study with the communication skills necessary to implement good working practices in the shopfitting industry.

What will I need for the course?

Steel toe boots or shoes (when in the workshops), all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be supplied by the College.

Black or Blue pen for all written work

2H or 3H pencil for all drawing and practical assessments, an eraser and pencil sharpener.

All other drawing and marking equipment will be supplied as and when required.

All materials, hand tools and Portable Power Tools will be supplied by the College while at college.

What options are open to me if I successfully complete the course?

This is a nationally recognised qualification that will lead on to Level 3 Diploma NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in Shopfitting Bench Work.

What qualifications or experience do I need to get on the course?

None specific to the bench joinery Industry, but employment in the shopfitting industry is essential. Good English and maths skills are an advantage.

Total commitment to work hard and meet the required standards in all areas of the course and a commitment in gathering the relevant ‘work based evidence’.

Length and start date of the course:

The duration is two years, 14 weeks in the first year and 9 weeks in the second year. This is a block release course where you attend College 2/3 weeks at a time or 2 days per week. These courses begin in September.
