Is the course for me?

Foundation Modern Apprenticeship (FMA)

This is a framework laid out by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and is applicable to all industry employed Apprentices who are sponsored by a managing agent.

This frame work requires the Apprentice to complete the Intermediate Construction Award (ICA), which is college based, the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2, which is work based, have obtained GCSE’s in English and Maths grades A-C, or complete a college based portfolio in Communications and Numeracy, complete a Health & Safety multiple choice online test (CSCS). The College based certificate in Employment Responsibilities and Rights. Together these elements make up the full Frame work Foundation Modern Apprenticeship (FMA), which must be completed inside 2 years.

How will I learn?

You will learn in a variety of ways:

On the job training by employer

Group and individual study at college

Work based assessment

Practical assessments

Written Assignments

Oral questioning at the end of each practical assessment

The use of on-line facilities

Considerable home study is required along with compiling a portfolio of evidence showing the relevant ‘units of competence’ gathered in the work place and a Key Skills portfolio at Level 1.

The course consists of a series of College set practical assessments and written assignments; together they consolidate the theory knowledge gained during group and individual study with the communication skills necessary to implement good working practices in the bench joinery industry.

What will I need for the course?

Steel toe boots or shoes (when in the workshops), all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be supplied by the College.

Black or Blue pen for all written work

2H or 3H pencil for all drawing and practical assessments, an eraser and pencil sharpener.

All other drawing and marking equipment will be supplied as and when required.

All materials, hand tools and Portable Power Tools will be supplied by the College.

What options are open to me if I successfully complete the course?

This is a nationally recognised qualification that will lead on to an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship at Level 3 in your chosen craft.

What qualifications or experience do I need to get on the course?

Apprenticeship sponsored by a managing agent, in either the bench joinery or shopfitting industry is essential. GCSE’s in English and Maths grades A-C, or Key Skills in Communications and Numericy at Level 1(this can be gained through college portfolio and CITB/C&G exams)

Total commitment to work hard and meet the required standards in all areas of the course and a commitment in gathering the relevant ‘work based evidence’.

Length and start date of the course:

The duration is two years, 14 weeks in the first year and 9 weeks in the second year. This is a block release course where you attend College 2/3 weeks at a time. This course begins in September.
