Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

Is the course for me?

The Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery is designed to prepare people to enter the industry in their chosen craft.  It has been specifically developed for delivery in a training environment using simulated conditions, and the test(s) are based on the learner showing what they can do as an individual through the completion of all the requirements of the qualification.

The Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery comprises:

◙ General Core Units
◙ Occupation-specific Units
◙ A practical Synoptic Assignment
◙ Multi choice Unit end Tests
◙ On-line testing of Knowledge – GOLA.


What does the course involve?

You will learn about:

◘ How to carry out safe working practices in construction
◘ Information, quantities and communicating with others
◘ Building methods and construction technology
◘ Basic woodworking joints
◘ How to maintain and use Carpentry and Joinery hand tools
◘ How to prepare and use Carpentry and Joinery Portable Power Tools


How will I learn?

You will learn in a variety of ways:

Group and individual study
Practical assessments
Written Assignments
Oral questioning at the end of each practical assessment

Multi choice Unit end Tests
The use of on-line facilities
Considerable home study is required

The course consists of a series of College set practical assessments plus a  practical Synoptic Assignment , written assignments and multi choice unit end tests On-line testing of Knowledge – GOLA ; together they consolidate the theory knowledge gained during group and individual study with the communication skills necessary to implement good working practices in the Carpentry and Joinery industry.

What will I need for the course?

Steel toe boots or shoes (when in the workshops), all other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be supplied by the College.

Black or Blue pen for written work

2H or 3H pencil for drawing and practical assessments, an eraser and pencil sharpener.

All other drawing and marking equipment will be supplied as and when required.

All materials, hand tools and Portable Power Tools will be supplied by the College.

What options are open to me if I successfully complete the course?

This is a nationally recognised qualification that provides a progression route towards a Level 2 Diploma in either Site Carpentry, Bench Joinery or Shopfitting Bench work.

Once you have gained employment in one of the industry disciplines, you can work towards a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 2 in your chosen discipline.

Or you may continue your studies at Level 3 Diploma in your chosen discipline.

 What qualifications or experience do I need to get on the course?

None specific to the Carpentry and Joinery Industry, but good English and maths skills are an advantage.
