Stonemasonry students learn to make a range of classical masonry components using hand tools. Most of the course is practical and focussed on producing high quality stonework. For further information on courses, select which course you are interested in on the index. Why not have a look at some of the past students' work in Stonemasonry?

The stonemasonry department delivers a range of courses, of varying lengths and technical challenge, for industry and for interested individuals. There are two main strands running each year, with other specialisms available by negotiation.

STRAND A. For individuals wanting to develop their skills and potential.

A1: Construction Awards Alliance Courses

Courses leading to the Construction Awards Alliance Diploma in Banker Masonry (QCF) at level 2 (Intermediate) or level 3 (Advanced) are offered, with introductory (Level 1) courses available for those who are less certain of their chosen path or their aptitude.

Courses such as this are largely practical but with underpinning knowledge and theory, and are undertaken in College. Individuals interested in developing practical skills for their own private purposes, or who wish to develop employment potential, could consider these courses. Depending on age and other circumstances, they may attended be at no cost, or for a fee. See Constructon Diploma or Advanced Constuction Diploma (see menu left). Courses may be one or two days per week , typically.

A2. Wider Craftsmanship. The City & Guilds Advanced Stonemasonry Diploma (CG5771-01).

This advanced diploma runs for a complete academic year, 5 days per week and is the most challenging in terms of pace, skill level and aptitude required . It incorporates the Level 3 Banker Masonry construction qualification described above, but in addition develops individuals’ wider abilities and successful students earn the City & Guilds Advanced Stonemasonry Diploma (CG5771-01) in addition. Successful students have entered the construction industry from this course, sometimes into specialist heritage areas such as the cathedrals. Others have developed their own business, sometimes with a wider sculptural approach. The best of these are assisted in those goals after graduation through the Maker in Residence scheme. The CG5771 is not publically funded and the whole year is subject to a fee (see the CG 5771 tab for details).
