6217- 01 BASIC CONSTRUCTION SKILLS
The City and Guilds 6217–01 in Basic Construction Skills will give all successful candidates a Level 1 City & Guilds certificate, with the opportunity of pursuing a career in construction, or for those wishing to go onto Further Education; they can progress to an ICA (Intermediate Construction Award) or to an NVQ/Apprenticeship in their chosen trade area.
This is a 6 week programme, and consists of 12 units in total, 8 mandatory, and 4 optional. There are four main areas which are covered, Carpentry, Electrics, Domestic plumbing, and Painting and Decorating, and we try to give the learner a good mixture of each. When the learner has produced all of the necessary practical and theory work to cover each of the 8 mandatory units, they will receive their full City & Guilds qualification.
The course provides opportunities for people to gain experience of practical trades involved in the construction industry through working in a controlled, safe environment through undertaking the following activities;
- Introduction to basic plumbing practises
- Fitting domestic electrical supply
- Basic carpentry, use of hand tools, joints etc.
- Health and Safety in the workplace

Unit 001 Fixing skirting to a timber background
Unit 006 Painting a timber window frame
Unit 007 Applying emulsion to wall by roller
Unit 022 Working with non-manipulative compression fittings
Unit 023 Copper pipe bending and jointing
Unit 025 Connect plastic fittings to a utility sink
Unit 032 Connecting flex to common apparatus
Unit 033 Installing a one way lighting circuit
Unit 034 Assembling 13 amp switched sockets wired in ring main
Unit 037 Constructing through mortice and tenon
Unit 040 Constructing centre bridle joint
Unit 041 Constructing halving dovetail joint
