1. MISSION STATEMENT The Building Crafts Collegeprovides specialist vocational training in the two disciplines of Woodwork and Stonemasonry. The College is committed to providing the necessary high standards, facilities, instructional staff and expertise to enable students to achieve levels of craft excellence in their chosen subjects.

3. APPLYING TO THE COLLEGE
Once you have studied the prospectus and are considering applying for a course, you are strongly advised to visit the College when you will have the opportunity of seeing our facilities, examining items which have recently been made and talking to the instructors and current students. During your visit you will have an interview with a senior member of the College who will:
Explain the implications of your choice of course study
Explain the entry requirements
Assess your suitability for the course
Ascertain any additional support required

5. WHEN YOU JOIN THE COLLEGE
When you commence your course of study you can expect us to provide:
A College and course induction programme which will include the issue of the College Charter; College Rules; Health and Safety and Fire Regulations
A safe and suitable environment
An experienced and committed tutor who will display sound, up to date knowledge and understanding of the subject area
Training sessions that start and end on time
A cafeteria providing drinks and snack refreshments
Regular review and assessment of your learning with your tutor and an explanation of how this is being recorded
An explanation of any changes to your course, including staff changes
Feedback on what you have achieved on the course
An explanation of how and when your final qualification will be awarded
An opportunity to make constructive comments on your course
6. WHAT WE ASK OF YOU
Abide by the College's rules, policies and procedures, and work cooperatively with the College staff and other students
Comply with all displayed Health and Safety and Fire regulations
Pay all fees promptly
Respect and take care of all facilities, equipment and resources
Attend regularly and punctually all training sessions unless sickness and agreed absence prevents attendance
Maintain a standard of behaviour acceptable to those you have contact with; show respect for the staff and other students
Participate actively in your programme of study and cooperate with others when appropriate to help your own and others' learning
Comply with the College's Equal Opportunities Policy at all times and promote equal opportunities by refusing to take part in behaviour that degrades others

7. LIBRARY, I.T FACILITIES AND LEARNING SUPPORT
The library was designed and constructed by a student once she had completed the fine woodwork diploma course. The Library provides a quite study area with lots for reference material, including journals, archived specialist articles and up to date books and standards relevant to courses being offered at the College. The Library also has desk top PC’s connected to the internet to study on-line.
Students are assessed during the induction process and additional learning support is identified followed by one to one support being provided by specialist staff
8. PERSONAL SAFETY and PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
All students must comply with the various Health and Safety Regulations, which are displayed in the College. Do not forget that under the Health and Safety at Work Act, you have a legal duty to take reasonable care of your own Health and Safety and that of others who may be effected by your actions. It is mandatory that all students wear protective glasses/goggles and safety boots/shoes at all times in the workshops. Trainer-type footwear is not permitted. A summary is included during the induction process.
Ear defenders, dust masks, eye protectors, anti-vibration gloves etc, are supplied by the College and available in each workshop for use by students. Full length trousers must be worn at all times (the wearing of shorts will not be allowed under any circumstances). All students will be trained in the use of PPE.
9. TRAINING CALENDAR FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 07/08
The new academic year begins on Monday 17th September 2007. The full list of term dates is shown below:

Summer Term Monday 31st March 2008
May Day: Monday 5th May 2008
Half Term: Tuesday 27th May – Friday 30th May 2008inclusive
Summer Term: College closes Friday 18th July 2008
College hours are: 0845 – 16.45 Monday – Thursday and 08.45 – 16.15 on Friday.
Evening courses in carpentry and stonemasonry are run on Tuesday evenings from 17.45 and on Thursday evenings from 5 – 7 p.m, during term time.
10. EMA – Education Maintenance Allowance
If you continue to study and develop your skills, you could receive up to £30 per week to help you with things like books, travel and equipment. You can also receive bonuses if you achieve well.
To be eligible to receive EMA you need to be:
16, 17 or 18 and about to leave, or have already left, compulsory education
Thinking of:
- joining an LSC funded e2e programme
- starting a full-time further education course at a college or school
- or becoming a Programme Led Apprentice
In a household where the income is less than the relevant EMA threshold (06/07 £30,810).

11. ALG - Adult Learning Grant
Similar to the EMA, this grant also could mean you receive up to £30 per week or £1,000 per year. However, this is for our more mature students. Below are the requirements for eligibility;
- Aged 19 or over. You can apply one month before your 19th birthday
- Studying in 2007/08
- Studying full time – at least 450 hours guided learning per year or 150 hours guided learning per term.
- Studying for your first full level 2 or first full level 3 qualification:
- Level 2 – 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or an NVQ2 or equivalent.
- Level 3 – 2 A levels or and NVQ3 or equivalent.
- UKresident
- Income less than £19,513 or a joint income of £30,810 if you are married or cohabiting partner
- Supporting your studies yourself and not receiving and other loans or benefits
