Information Advice and Guidance – Your learning Journey

Deciding on the right course for you or what your next step should be can be difficult. At the Building Crafts College we are here to help you make the correct, informed choice about your future. We will provide you with information, unbiased advice and guidance at the beginning of your learning journey, throughout your time at college and at the end of your time at The Building Crafts College.

We are very proud of the routes many of our learners have taken into rewarding and high profile careers in the heritage, crafts and construction sectors, building on the skills they have acquired at the college.

Enquiry

When you enquire at the college we will:

  • Offer you impartial advice about the courses we offer
  • Invite you to visit the college and speak with members of staff and other students about the courses

 Entry assessment

  • As a potential BCC learner, we want you to choose the right course. We will:
  • Invite you to an entry assessment, where your English and Maths will be assessed
  • Discuss any additional learning needs/requirements
  • Advise you if any additional dyslexia assessments maybe required
  • Interview you and discuss the course you would like to join
  • Explain what support is offered at the BCC and how
  • Discuss options open to you as a potential BCC learner -suitability of course, attendance patterns and any costs involved
  • If appropriate levels of English and Maths have not been let, we will advise you of a suitable route, via outside agencies if appropriate

Enrolment

After Entry Assessment, we will complete the necessary funding documentation to enable you to enrol on a course. We will:

  • Complete an Enrolment Form
  • Check passport/birth certificate
  • Offer you information regarding grants and available funding
  • Send you a letter confirming your place on a course, attendance patterns and equipment required for the beginning of your course
  • Please note a registration fee and deposit will be required from applicants aged 19+

Induction

We want your experience at The Building Crafts College to be a positive and enjoyable experience. We want you to be safe at all times and act in accordance with the college charter. When you begin a course, you will complete a comprehensive induction, which will include:

  • Health, safety and welfare
  • College charter -what we expect from you and what you can expect from us
  • What facilities are available to use
  • Attendance patterns, including timekeeping
  • Safeguarding
  • Additional learning support, dyslexia support
  • Counselling services
  • Who to go to if you have a problem
  • What to do if you wish to complain

On programme

Throughout your course, we will continually provide advice, information and guidance to you. We will do this by:

  • Discussing your progress regularly and identifying any additional help required
  • Offering seminars from visiting lecturers
  • Offering counselling, dyslexia support and additional learning support. Further information about Student Support can be found here.

Have your say

During your time at the college we will seek your views and opinions in order to continuously improve our service. We will do this by:

  • Having student representative meetings every term, attended by elected representatives
  • Completing quarterly confidential questionnaires
  • Discussing your progress/improvements during your Individual Learning Plan reviews
  • Having an open door policy so that you can access the right support from staff in relation to your learning or personal development

Progression

As you near the end of your course, it can sometimes be difficult to know what you want to do next or where to go for help. We will:

  • Discuss options of staying on and progressing to other courses offered at The Building Crafts College
  • Provide you with unbiased advice and guidance
  • Refer you to educational organisations if suitable
  • During tutorials explain the options open to you
  • Refer you to professionals for advice
