Museums & Galleries Technician Apprentice Standard Level 3





This apprenticeship programme is designed to give students who are employed as a museum or gallery based technician the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in a demanding and challenging sector.

The programme will develop practice related to activities such as event/exhibition preparation, joinery and related fabrication, artifact movement and storage, environment control together with the development of those behaviours necessary to operate effectively as a team member in a dynamic workplace. These assessed elements will enable students to operate to a professional standard. Taught by experienced and highly skilled tutors, the course will draw on the skills, knowledge and experience of nationally recognised experts visiting from museums and galleries who will ensure that learning is current and of the highest quality. In addition, throughout the course, visits will be made to a range of museums, galleries and exhbitions etc. The main elements of this programme are:

  • Principles of collections and exhbitions
  • The organisation and the laws that relate to its operation
  • Health & Safety in the workplace
  • Care, storage and transportation of objects
  • Maintaining effective and positive stakeholder and workplace relationships
  • Time management, decision-making and budgetry control
  • Managing the work environment, including the safe and correct use of tools, equipment and materials
  • Presenting display areas including fabrication of display units
  • Displaying appropriate behaviours as required by the standard
  • Functional Skills in English and Maths at Level 2
  • End Point Assessment (EPA) as required by the standard and delivered by the End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO)
  • An introduction to art history will be included in the programme. In addition, apprentices may enrol onto evening and short courses in subjects such as wood carving and stone carving.

Basic IT Skills. Employers will identify specific entry requirements through recruitment and selection.

Grade 4 or higher in maths & English. Applicants without these will need to achieve this level before completing the End Point Assessment.


TBC but likely to be 15 months (4 terms). This may vary dependent upon learner progress.

Tuition and completion of the standard modules, including key sklls qualifications, takes place in the first 12 months followed by gateway passage to, and preparation for, EPA in the final three months.

Attendance at college will be on a block release basis, with each block usually lasting two weeks.
