Short Course – Detail Taking and Setting Out for Stonemasonry

A  12-day course is aimed at those in the stonemasonry, construction and building conservation sector wishing to develop their skills in surveying, setting out and hand drawing of architectural stone components.
The course will take place in our stone workshop and drawing space and we will take inspiration from historic structures and stone components on display in the stonemasonry department.
The emphasis will be on accuracy and technical aspects of detail taking and drawing conventions, an invaluable foundation for developing skills in CAD and digital surveying methods. Please note this course does NOT include any CAD training.

  • Interest in stone work and technical drawing
  • No prior experience necessary

You will need to bring:

  • Steel toe-capped boots (to be worn at all times while on course)
  • H or 2H pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser/rubber
  • Pens/pencils
  • Notebook/paper


  • 12 day course on Fridays during term time. More detail to follow
