Short Course – An Introduction to Stone Carving

A 12-day Saturday course or 5 day, one week block Summer School course for beginners or those with little stonemasonry or carving experience. The course will start with a simple vessel carving, using soft limestone. Through this you will be introduced to the use of hand tools and techniques of working stone. Students will then progress to creating a carved form in limestone, which you will design and make with guidance from your tutor.
Set in our well-equipped stonemasonry workshops, the course will be an opportunity to learn about the basics of stonemasonry and see how techniques can be used to make a simple form in stone.

  • No prior experience necessary

You will need to bring:

  • Steel toe-capped boots (to be worn at all times while on course)
  • H or 2H pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser/rubber
  • Pens/pencils
  • Notebook/paper
