Dunhill Crafts person – Pipe Making

(Permanent Full-Time)

The hours are 38 hours per week 

How Will You Make An Impact?

Dunhill are currently seeking a Crafts person in a woodworking environment to join our team in the Pipe Workshop at their established Walthamstow factory. 

  • To be part of and support a small team in the production of smoking pipes, and smokers’ accessories – this includes the use of machine and hand processes required in the pipe making operations  
  • To assist in Health & Safety on the site as required by the Production & Facilities Manager  
  • To undertake any other production tasks as required 

 

Key Accountabilities:

The White Spot pipe has over a 100 years of manufacturing heritage, maintaining the same craft processes to this day. The role is workshop based. The job holder will be trained in house to ensure a broad knowledge of processes such as hand filing, sandpapering, and scraping, use of rotary sanding machines, use of rotary burnishing and polishing machines, hand coloring and finishing, use of power saws and drilling equipment. 

Under the guidance of the Production Foreman, will need to carry out tasks, and ensure work is completed within pre-set standard times  

  • To ensure production processes are maintained to our high-quality standards
  • Assist in the machine settings as required for various processes
  • To have a thorough understanding of the production cycle
  • To be aware and comply fully with Health & Safety Standards
  • To assist in general and planned maintenance needs on the site

 

How Will You Experience Success With Us?

  • Solid understanding of a small workshop environment
  • Ideally come from a woodworking background, with at least a minimum basic knowledge of woodworking processes
  • Competent in the use of woodworking tools/machines/equipment
  • Basic technical competence such as reading drawings, using various measuring devices i.e.Vernier calliper’s  
  • Basic ability to setup machines and equipment for the various operations
  • Embrace the challenge of learning a very unique set of skills in the art of pipe making
  • Reliable and consistent – dedicated attitude
  • The learning cycle for making pipes is quite extensive – we require this individual to look at the long term prospects of his/her role  
  • Good communication skills

Join our woodworking workshop to make made to order tables and benches from reclaimed wood/materials. We are a small but efficient and quality conscious operation working from our workshop in Leyton taking orders via our website www.thinkfound.co.uk

At the beginning the candidate will be involved in every area of the business. They will start from the ground up being involved in each workstation on the production line to create products (tables and benches) we make. They will then have an understanding of the product and the environment in which the products are made which can inform their future learning to work on our production line and then to assist and manage others with the aim to run the workshop when qualified.

 

What we need:

  • A dedicated, competent individual able to work on their own and take direction and deliver.
  • Strong work ethic and eye for detail. They must be competent and check their work and know what is acceptable quality and what is not.
  • They must have an understanding of and be disciplined in maintaining a uniformed style and follow instruction.
  • Capable of overseeing tasks from start to finish and completing tasks and projects on time.

 

Areas of work include:

  • Wood selection/managing wood stock. Use of deWalt Chop Saw to cut boards to length.
  • Use of orbit sanders (festool and mirka) and drum sander machine to sand wood.
  • Festool Domino joiner to dominion join boards together also using glue and then clamps = table assembly.
  • Using a Hammer Combi Machine C3 31; table saw and thicknesser.
  • Finishing using wood stains, oils and waxes to finish items.
  • Packing, packing items to be shipped out to customers.
  • Managing staff and trainees.

We are seeking to appoint an experienced Scenic Carpenter to support operational demands ensuring that all scenic construction carpentry activities are carried out to the highest possible standard of safety, efficiency, and quality.

You will ideally have:

 

  • City and Guilds in Carpentry and Joinery or equivalent qualifications or experience
  • Significant and extensive experience of scenic carpentry manufacture using modern and traditional techniques and an understanding of period styles and history working
  • Experience of constructing large scale sets for theatre venues or companies an advantage.
