Woodwork classes: part-time, evening & weekend options

Enrol now for  part time courses in wood carving, bench joinery and furniture making – all delivered her in our workshops in Stratford, East London, E15 1AH.

Saturday & Thursday evening classes run termly, with the opportunity to continue attending for a full year or more as you develop your skills. The Fine Furniture Design & Making Diploma course runs for 3 years.

Craft Evening Class – Wood carving 

Our wood carving course is delivered by the The Wood Carving Studio whose projects include carvings for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Barge and historic gilding works at the Tower of London.

Dates & times: 5.00 – 7.30pm on Thursdays.

Craft Evening Class – Introduction to Woodworking

This course offers an excellent introduction to woodworking techniques, starting from the basics and progressing towards constructing your own woodwork projects.

Delivered by our skilled tutors, the course will be run from our large and well-equipped woodworking department, where you will receive guidance in the safe and appropriate use of hand tools, the selection and use of various timbers and have an introduction to the use of power tools.

We aim to give you the technical skills to assemble and join wood safely and with confidence, and to inspire you either to continue developing your skills over a further year of evening classes or to progress onto one of our mainstream courses.

Saturday School – Furniture Making:

This is a practical, workshop based course that offers a comprehensive introduction to furniture making with hand tools and also some power tools and static machinery. Students will undertake the construction of small end table in hardwood for taking home at the end of the course.

Dates & times: 9.00 am – 4.00 pm on Saturdays for 12 weeks.

Saturday School – Introduction to Joinery: 

This is an ideal beginners class or a refresher course for learners who have been away from working in wood for a while. You will cover a range of traditional and contemporary techniques and will make a tool box and mallet to take away at the end of the course.

Dates & times: 9.00 am – 4.00 pm on Saturdays for 12 weeks.

Diploma in Fine Furniture Design & Making (part time option, weekdays):

The Furniture Design & Making Diploma is an intensive and rigorous 3-year part-time programme structured to provide students with the skills and knowledge  to progress towards a professional career in furniture making.

The programme brings together the range of skills such as joinery, wood machining, wood turning and furniture making. These accredited elements will enable students to operate to a professional standard. A strong emphasis on developing competent and confident woodworking skills – using both traditional hand tools and modern timber processing machinery – will provide students with the technical knowledge to start designing and making their own furniture items as they progress further through the course.

Taught by experienced and highly skilled tutors the course also draws on the skills and knowledge of nationally recognised furniture makers and designers and in addition, throughout the course, visits will be made to furniture workshops, exhibitions etc

Dates & times: 2 days per week, starting April 2022 or September 2022. Duration is 3 years.
