Summer School – An Introduction to Furniture Making

Summer School course
This is a practical, workshop based course that offers a comprehensive introduction to woodworking and furniture making with hand tools and also some power tools and static machinery.  Students will learn:
  • To use marking out tools to lay out joinery.
  • To use a handsaw, chisels and planes to cut and fit basic woodworking joints (dovetails, halvings, mortice and tenons).
  • How to sharpen edge tools (chisels, plane irons).
  • How to hand plane timber from sawn.
  • The safe use of an electric router and how to use it to run grooves in timber.
  • Some basic timber technology and how woodworking joints and furniture are assembled to allow for timber movement.
  • How to clamp and glue up your components.
  • How to cut hinge housings and fit hinges.
  • How to prepare timber surfaces and finish with oil.
  • Lots of tips and tricks and how to fix your mistakes!

Please bring:

  • Steel toe cap boots (TO BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON COURSE)
  • H or 2H pencils
  • pencil sharpener
  • rubber/eraser
  • notebook/paper
